I voice my STRONG support for NEXT Renewable Fuels and their proposed clean fuels project at Port Westward. NEXT is a clear win for the environment, for skilled union members, for the Columbia County economy and for the immediate transition away from toxic fossil fuels. Community support for NEXT in Columbia County and throughout Oregon is overwhelming and diverse – environmental organizations, elected officials, environmental justice leaders, union leaders, business owners and thousands of your constituents have weighed in. While the typical build nothing opposition submitted around 80 negative comments about NEXT’s air permit, supporters submitted MORE THAN 7,000 comments in favor!

NEXT has already received its key Oregon permits, which means it passed some of the most rigorous evaluation standards in the nation and will uphold the states strict environmental standards. This project directly aligns with the goals of the Inflation Reduction Act, which you addressed in an August 12, 2022 statement: “Through economy-wide investments in…energy, manufacturing, and transportation, this pivotal legislation will help the U.S. combat climate change while creating new, good paying jobs and mitigating climate inequities.”  This is EXACTLY what the NEXT project does, without incentives from the government! The federal government should be celebrating this project, instead of stalling it through inefficient regulatory process. I’m asking you to join us in supporting NEXT and direct the Army Corps of Engineers to stop delaying the EIS process.

Status

NEXT Renewable Fuels turns recycled organic materials, such as used cooking oil, into an advanced biofuel that works just like petroleum-based diesel, but with as much as 85 percent less greenhouse gas emissions.

Oregon has an opportunity to be a leader in this field as well as bring high-quality union jobs to a part of the State that needs them! And, the fuels produced in Oregon will be shipped up and down the west coast and create an emissions savings equivalent to removing more than 1 million automobiles from the road!

Currently in the permitting phase, the facility is anticipated to start operations in 2026. When the facility is complete, NEXT Renewable Fuels will position Oregon as a leader in advanced biofuels production.
